By Sheila J. Curran

In 2007 more than 200,000 students will study ab road . Spending academic
time away from the “home institution” increasingly represents a right of passage—so
much so that in some colleges like Colby, Dickinson, and St. Olaf, more than 80 percent
of students leave the United States for at least a semester. The question for many sophomores — particularly in predominantly liberal arts colleges and universities—is not whether they’ll be having an international experience, but where.

What’s behind the burgeoning interest? Student
essays tell of multiple aspirations: educational opportunity,
the ability to gain a different perspective,
cross-cultural understanding, foreign travel, desire to
learn a language, or interest in studying a particular
subject. The list goes on. But more often than not,
students also have in the back of their mind that education
abroad will give them a career advantage.

Many study abroad offices actively promote the
career benefits of an international education. Unfortunately,
these benefits do not happen simply by
getting on a plane and landing in a different country.
Students have to work for them.

Putting study abroad on a resume will usually attract
an employer’s attention. But only an interview
will determine whether the employer sees the student’s
experience as a career boost or a career bust. [ NAFSA.org ]

“This sector’s 2 million students are usually older, working adults, often living independently and arising from a less affluent socioeconomic cohort. These students require higher education programs with more flexible schedules to match busy, demanding lifestyles and life challenges. Flexible scheduling means classes start at career colleges throughout the calendar year, not just in September.”

What Matters to You?

What’s important to you may not necessarily be what’s important to your best friend, siblings or parents. You’ve got to find the college that’s the best fit for you. The happier you are at the college you choose, the more likely you’ll be to succeed and complete your degree. Consider:

Location

· Geographically, where would you prefer to live?

· How far from home do you want to go?

· Do you want to live in a big city or smaller town?

Type

· Do you want to go to a two-year, four-year or a community college?

· Are you interested in a vocational/technical school?

Academic Programs

· Does the college offer the major you want? Is it strong in that academic area?

· If you’re undecided, are a variety of majors offered at the college?

Campus Life

· What types of social events are popular?

· Are there fraternities and sororities?

· Are the athletic events popular?

· Are the arts supported?

· Are there clubs or organizations on campus that interest you?

Cost and Financial Aid Availability

· What’s the total cost of education at the college?

· How much financial aid is offered?

Facilities

· Are the student facilities, such as the library, athletic center and health center, adequate?

· Living Accommodations

· Do most students live on or off campus?

· Is housing available?

· What are the residence halls like?

· Are there different housing options?

Campus Safety

· How reliable is campus security?

· Is it possible to view a campus security report?

Book Review by Julia Panke Makela

Career Education: History and Future by Kenneth B. Hoyt, 200 pages, 2005, National Career Development Association.

Within Career Education: History and Future, Kenneth B. Hoyt shares his extensive knowledge derived from over five decades of professional efforts to improve connections between education and work. His ten years of experience serving as the Director of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Career Education takes center stage in a personal, reflective exploration of the Career Education Movement that began during the 1970s and, in many ways, is still alive today. While much of the discussion depicts a journey of highs and lows in the political arena, Hoyt chooses not to primarily focus on the federal legislation as written. Rather, he shares an insider’s recollections of courageous, creative, and persistent leaders whose influence and dedication have shaped this dynamic movement. Within this book, career development practitioners and scholars can uncover a unique, behind-the-scenes understanding of the people and efforts central to the Career Education Movement – it offers a glimpse into personalities and contributions that other historical accounts lack.
