Career Education: Dane Martinez, a 29-year-old Bronx-born man of Puerto Rican descent, who studied Broadcast Journalism at Syracuse University, shifted gears into an education career after 9/11.
Martinez, currently the program manager of the Bronx’ Department of Education, landed his job after working for several years as the Dean of students at Achievement First Bushwick Middle School. Education is a natural fit for this ‘born mentor,’ who easily relates to the kids living without positive male role models at home, since his own father went to jail when he was only 3. A typical day for Martinez includes both his leadership duties overseeing the school’s administration, and chatting with the students about everything from dating and deodorant to hip-hop music.
